Fort William and Mary

Fort William and Mary was first constructed by the British in 1632 to defend the harbour at Portsmouth. On December 14, 1774, it was raided by locals led by John Langdon. The garrison of 5 men and one officer were easily overrun by Langdon's 40 volunteers who took 72 barrels of gun powder. A day later, another group of rebels, this time led by John Sullivan, again raided the fort taking all of the arms, supplies and some cannons.

Sault Locks

Originally, the first lock on this site was built in 1798 by the Northwest Trading Company. It was used to facilitate the shipment of goods past the rapids of the St. Mary's River. However, in 1814, U.S. forces attacked and destroyed the lock during the War of 1812.

George's Island

Originally named Ile a la Raquette (Snowshoe Island), this island located in Halifax harbour was renamed George Island in 1749 after King George II. From the mid-18th century until after World War II, it played a part in the defense of Halifax.

Pioneer Church

This church was originally non-denominational when it was constructed in 1880. Built on a lot donated by John Foreman, it was to be both a union meeting hall, and place of worship for the farmers and woodsmen in Bear Cave.

CFS Carp - Diefenbunker

In 1958, it was decided that a nuclear shelter to protect the seniors of the Canadian Government would be built. In addition, several other such shelters would be built around the country to aid in dealing with nuclear emergency and rebuilding. Construction of CFS Carp, the largest facility, began in 1959 in an abandoned gravel pit that was found to have an underground water spring.

Rockingham Church

When I arrived, I was immediately taken by the commanding position the church held atop a fairly high hill surrounded by grave markers. As I walked up the hill, I wondered how the town's older worshipers might have made it up.

Eastern State Penitientiary

The history of Eastern State Penitentiary is a fascinating story spanning many years. As a model for prisons yet to be built, it would stand as first a shining beacon, and then as a potential embarrassment both admired and reviled.

HMCS Haida

HMCS Haida, a Tribal Class destroyer, served with the Royal Canadian Navy from 1943 to 1963. During World War II, Haida destroyed more tonnage of enemy ships than any other Canadian Navy vessel. At 337 feet in length, 36.5 feet at the beam, with a draught of 13 feet, Haida was designed to be more of a small cruiser than a standard destroyer.
