Genesee County Home

It was a dark and stormy night as we made our way to the haunted asylum in rural New York state. While enjoying a Valentine's get-away, we heard about a ghost hunt at the Rolling Hills Asylum in East Bethany. I read up on the building and its history and immediately decided that, despite my complete skepticism with regard to the existence of ghosts, it was still a great opportunity to explore a historic building with legal permission. These opportunities don't present themselves often. Aside from that, I had never seen a ghost hunt besides those on TV. It would be fun to see first hand.

Streator DEW Training Facility

This station was built in 1952 / 53 as a prototype of the stations that would become the Distant Early Warning (DEW) Line In 1956, with completion of the line nearing, its role changed to that of a training facility for the personnel that would man the stations in the Arctic.

Lyndonville AFS

This base was originally opened as North Concord AFS and became operational in 1956. It was equipped with AN/MPS-11 and AN/MPS-14 radars. In 1958, the AN/FPS-6A height-finder radar was added, and in 1959, an AN/FPS-3. In 1959, it became part of the SAGE system, feeding data to Topsham AFS. In August, 1962, the station began reporting to Steward AFB in New York.

St. Joseph's Girls Indian Residential School

The Government of Canada began a program of assimilation of the native population. To this end, many schools were opened, mostly by religious entities, across the country. These schools would teach English culture to native children and weed out their own language and way of life.

Camp Bison (Burwash)

Once a low-security work farm for prisoners, this prison supported an entire town for many years. Houses from the town were either torn down, or sold and moved to other places. The main prison building, and many of its supporting buildings, was also torn down. The only remnants, aside from the outline of streets, sidewalks, and disconnected power poles, is Camp Bison pictured here.
