While driving home from a weekend in Belleville, we stopped at this fascinating little cemetary. I had noticed it on our drive down, and made a mental note to stop on the way back for a closer look. I'm happy I did.
The cemetary was apparently active between 1861 and 1943 although there are stones that date back even earlier. A story in The Intelligencer talks about how a local family, with several relatives resting at this cemetary, decided to clean up the overgrown plot. Â
It caught my attention in particular because of the large trees that are actually part of the cemetary. While so many are just open fields, this one is shaded and picturesque. Somewhere that I felt was almost welcoming. I encourage you to stop by if you're in the area.
