August 9 (cont’d)
One of the locations I was looking forward to checking out was the wreckage of the SS Ithaka. I wanted to be sure to go there at low tide as this seemed to offer the best look at it. I had seen photos of people who had walked out to the wreck, but later read accounts of polar bears taking naps inside the wreckage. It’s a long run from the ship to the closest place I could park my truck, and I was reasonably sure the bear could do it in less time than I. This seemed like an effective use of my drone.
From a point closest the wreck as I could drive, I sent up my drone for a closer look. The haze from the unseasonably warm temperatures was diffusing the sunlight nicely, and I could not have asked for a better situation. A complete lack of wind made the drone’s flight a quick and easy one, leaving plenty of battery upon its return.

We continued with the check list of locations that I had put together and headed out to the Rocket Tracking Station. We had come out the evening before in our constant look for polar bears, but instead left with wonderful sunset shots silhouetting the remains of the two domes.
Today, I began by unpacking the drone and set about getting some aerial shots. This spot, however, was blocked from flying and I was unable to do so. I went inside the building and was amazed by all the was left behind.
After we left here, we continued exploring all of the roads we could find. While driving the back road behind the airport, we were surprised to see signs along the fence warning of unexploded ordnance. We had earlier learned that the airport was originally built by the United States Army Air Force. Given the proximity of the warnings to the runway, I could not imagine how UXB’s would be there, but this was just one more mystery that we were discovering makes up Churchill, Manitoba.
With amazing scenery, and peeks of wildlife, I almost forgot one of the locations I had wanted to check out. Thankfully, I stumbled upon it on one of the roads. I pulled into the parking area that showed this was a popular site and began exploring Miss Piggy before returning to town.
