History:Â
Construction of this site was completed, and operations began in the fall of 1954. During its 10 years of operation, RCAF Station Beaverbank would feature such search radar as the CPS-6B, FPS-502, FPS-3, and FPS-508. Height radar would include the Bangor NORAD Sector with headquarters at Topsham Air Force Station in Brunswick, Maine.
SAGEÂ was fully operational at RCAF Station Beaverbank on January 1, 1964. Unfortunately, also as a result of reorganization, it was determined that Beaverbank was no longer required, and was closed on April 1, 1964, just 4 months after SAGE went live.
Personal Commentary:Â
Taking a roundabout and somewhat rough road, we arrived just below the operations site and continued the remaining distance on foot following the water-filled ATV tracks. Arriving at the main concrete building with it's semi-detached tower, we immediately set about checking for a way in. We found what could have been an entry point, but were ill-equipped to take advantage. Unfortunately, the interior would have to remain an unseen mystery to us, at least first-hand.
After having a look around, we decided to return for a look at the remains of the domestic site surrounding the Nursing Home that currently dominates the property.
