From what I've been able to piece together, this building was originally constructed as a dedicated observatory for the Canadian Astronomical Research Group in 1976. The equipment, apparently including a 24" telescope, was removed in 1997, and the building converted into a private home.

UPDATE: This location was demolished sometime between this visit and June, 2013.

Personal Commentary:

Imagine having a house with a two-car garage, 2 bedrooms plus a master bedroom, a jacuzzi tub with heat lamp, large dining room, large living room with hardwood floors and a commanding view from a hilltop. Now, imagine that you can walk up a curving staircase to your own observatory dome.

For some reason, these people had that and walked away...

I visited this abandoned observatory, a few times actually. The first was around 1985. The place was already a mess and there was no telescope. We had brought a few beverages, it was nighttime and quite dark.
We went up the staircase to the dome and out the window onto the roof where we drank our beers and looked at the starry sky. The 400 highway down below to the west was easily seen from our vantage point. It was obvious at that point why the observatory would not be practical; too much light pollution from the north and southbound traffic!!
In 1989, I returned to the observatory house with my to-be wife. There was now a gate at the end of the long driveway. We parked the car and started walking up the drive as I figured it was status quo/abandoned. About halfway up the driveway a van starts making it's way from the house to meet up with us. He approached us and then stopped abeam us and rolled down his window. We said Hi and that we were going to the observatory.
He advised us that it was now private property and indicated that we would be best to leave, which we did! A tad embarrassing as I was hoping to spend some quality time with my lady.......that was many moons ago! Last time there would now in 2020 be 31 years back. The man would have been in his mid forties then...so possibly he died and left it to no one. Beautiful remote spot it was...you could see the dome for miles, but I guess no longer....
